Carrier Billing Adjustments

Carrier Billing Adjustments

After a package ships, carriers may apply billing adjustments if the actual package dimensions or weight differ from what was declared at the time of shipment. These adjustments are passed through to your account.

What Causes Adjustments

  • Dimensional weight: If a package is large but light, carriers calculate a "dimensional weight" (length x width x height / divisor). If the dimensional weight exceeds the actual weight, the higher value is used for billing.
  • Address correction fees: If the recipient address was incorrect and the carrier updated it during delivery, a correction fee is applied.
  • Residential delivery surcharges: Shipments routed to residential addresses by UPS or FedEx incur a surcharge that may not have been captured at label creation if the address type was not confirmed.

Minimizing Adjustments

  • Keep your SKU dimensions and weights accurate in the system. Incorrect data is the primary cause of dimensional weight adjustments.
  • Validate recipient addresses before orders are released. YouParcel performs address validation, but client-supplied address data quality is critical.

Disputing an Adjustment

If you believe a carrier adjustment is incorrect, submit a ticket with the tracking number and the adjustment amount in question. We will pull the package scan data and, if warranted, file a dispute with the carrier on your behalf. Note that carrier adjustment disputes have strict filing windows (typically 30 to 60 days from the invoice date).
